The following are my notes of Dr. John Ewart’s lecture at SEBTS.
In Galatians 4:4-5 and we see an amazing statement about how God sovereignly orchestrates history and culture. “In the fullness of time God sent his son.”
But what does it mean that God sent his Son in the fullness of time?
1. Historically God Paved The Way
We must consider the power of Rome, the peace of Rome, and the Edict of Caesar. These contexts helped set the stage for the coming of Christ.
2. Linguistically God Paved The Way
We must consider the richness of koine Greek.
3. Philosophically God Paved The Way
We must consider how Greek philosophers were asking questions about the meaning of life and what our purpose is. God was stirring up questions that were not being asked.
4. Physically God Paved The Way
We must consider the Roman road and the Palestinian center of Jerusalem. If you wanted to start a worldwide movement, then this would have been the place for you start that movement based upon a physical and geographical location.
5. Spiritually God Paved The Way
The Old Religions in the 1st Century (Greco-Roman Gods) were not answering people’s questions. These old religions were failing. Jewish dispersion had taken place and synagogues were spread throughout the world where Paul went to preach the gospel in.
