The following are my notes from a workshop at the Legacy Conference 2013 by David Wood and Sam Shamoun.
Objection # 1 – The Bible has been corrupted.
Muslims have to believe that the bible is corrupted, but their scriptures teach them that no one can corrupt the scriptures.
This is what we call “The Islamic Dilemma” because current Muslims tell us that we should not trust our bible but Muhammad and the Qur’an tell us that we should trust the bible.
For example consider these passages:
Qur’an 3:3-4 – He has revealed to you the Book with truth, verifying that which is before it, and He revealed the Torah and the Gospel aforetime, a guidance for the people, and He sent the Qur’an.
Qur’an 7:157 – Those who follow the Messenger, the unlettered Prophet, whom they find mentioned in their own (Scriptures) in the Law and the Gospel it is they who will prosper.
Qur’an 61:14 – O you who believe! Be helpers (in the cause) of Allah, as [Jesus] son of Marium said to (his) disciples: Who are my helpers in the cause of Allah? The disciples said: We are helpers (in the cause) of Allah. So a party of the children of Israel believed and another party disbelieved…
Qur’an 10:94 – But if you are in doubt as to what We have revealed to you, ask those who read the Book before you; certainly the truth has come to you from your Lord, therefore you should not be of the disputers.
Qur’an 5:68 “Say: O people of the Book! Ye have no ground to stand upon unless ye stand fast by the Law, the Gospel, and all the revelation that has come to you from your Lord.”
Qur’an 6:114-115 “Shall I then seek a judge other than Allah? And He it is who has revealed to you the Book (which is) made plain; and those whom We have given the Book know that it is revealed by your Lord with truth, therefore you should not be of the disputers. And the word of your Lord has been accomplished…
Qur’an 18:27 – And recite what has been revealed to you of the Book of your Lord, there is none who can alter His words; and you shall not find any refuge besides him.
This passage teaches that no one can change the words of Allah.
If there is one section of the Qur’an that you should memorize or know it is this passage.
But why do they come to thee for decision, when they have (their own) law before them? – Therein is the (plain) command of Allah; yet even after that, they would turn away. For they are not (really) People of faith.
In order to understand the context of this passage and several others in the Qur’an you need to know the Hadith.
This passage is a response to a historical situation and when asked a question Muhommed says that they should not come to him for a decision but that they should go to the Law (The Torah) for their answer.
It was We who revealed the Law (to Moses): therein was guidance and light. By its standard have been judged the Jews, by the prophets who bowed (as in Islam) to Allah’s will, by the rabbis and the Doctors of Law: for to them was entrusted the protection of Allah’s Book…
We ordained therein for them: “Life for life, eye for eye, nose for nose, ear for ear, tooth for tooth, and wounds equal for equal.” But if anyone remits the retaliation by way of charity, it is an act of atonement for himself. And if any fail to judge by (the light of) what Allah hath revealed, they are (No better than) wrong-doers.
And in their footsteps We sent Jesus the son of Mary, confirming the Law that had come before him: We sent him the Gospel: therein was guidance and light, and confirmation of the Law that had come before him: a guidance and an admonition to those who fear Allah.
We need to ask when did corruption take place? Because we know that Jesus’ book was no corrupt and we have historical-arecheological evidence that Jesus’ book was the same book we read to day. So when did the bible get corrupted because the Qur’an tells us that Jesus’ bible was not corrupt but provides guidance.
Let the people of the Gospel judge by what Allah revealed therein. If any do fail to judge by (the light of ) what Allah hath revealed, they are (no better than) those who rebel.
To thee We sent the Scripture in truth, confirming the scripture that came before it, and guarding it in safety: so judge between them by what Allah hath revealed, and follow not their vain desires, diverging from the Truth hath come to thee. To each among you have we prescribed a law and an open way. If Allah had so willed, He would have made you a single people, but (His plan is) to test you in what He hath given you: so strive as in a race in all virtues. The goal of you all is to Allah; it is He that will show you the truth of the matters in which ye dispute.
We can break down the foundations of their faith by simply pointing out these two passages:
5:47 & 18:27
There are two options:
1) Either we have the inspired word of God and Islam is false because it contradicts the Christian bible.
2) We have a corrupted word and Islam is false because it says that our word cannot be corrupted.
Either way Islam is false because it is a false religion and false religions by definition are going to be false no matter how you look at it.
Objection # 2 – The Bible Is Immoral.
A Muslim will say, if Jesus died for your sins then you can sin all you want.
However, Romans 6:1-2 & 15-16 make it crystal clear that you cannot continue in sin.
The problem with this objection is that Muslims believe this is themselves.
Consider these passages:
Sahih Muslim 6665, 6666, & 6668.
110 Hadith Qudsi – Allah’s Messenger said: On the day of Resurrection, my Ummah (nation) will be gathered into three groups. One sort will enter Paradise without rendering an account (of their deeds). Another sort will be reckoned an easy account and admitted into Paradise. Yet another sort will come bearing on their backs heaps of sins like great mountains. Allah will ask the angels through He knows best about them…
Objection # 3 – The Canonization of the Bible
Protestants have 66 books of the bible, but Roman Catholics and Orthodox Christians have 73 books.
So Muslims ask which cannon is correct? Who added or who took away books of the bible?
We should tell Muslims the Qur’an in 17:101 tells us that the Children of Israel were given the Old Testament.
So we should go to the Jews and the Jews will tell us how many books are inspired in the Old Testament and the Jew would tell them the cannon.
This is what Romans 3:1-2 says as well that Jews have been entrusted with the oracles of God.
